Hal Wolin

The Cocktail Guru
At the height of the craft cocktail resurgence, Hal decided to take his obsession and love of cocktails beyond the bar stool and began writing about cocktail lounges, reviewing spirits, and creating original cocktails on his blog.  His recipes have been published in trade magazines such as Beverage Media  as well as the Food and Wine Cocktail Book and have been used in product brochures from companies including Compass Box, Maker’s Mark and Sydney Frank Importing. In addition, Hal has had inspirational and educational bar stints at East Village cocktail lounges.

Making a name for himself in the industry, Hal became an NYC-based member of The Cocktail Guru (www.TheCocktailGuru.com), a full-service beverage consulting firm that was established by Jonathan Pogash in 2005 and specializes in drink development, brand representation, beverage programs, special events, and mixology classes for spirit brands, restaurants, bars and hotels.

Since joining the Cocktail Guru team, Hal has worked with Jonathan to create signature cocktails and beverage programs for spirit brands, restaurants, bars and hotels.  Hal has served as a Cocktail Apprentice at Tales of the Cocktail, and has worked with Jonathan on editing and revising the 75th Anniversary edition of the Mr. Boston Cocktail Guide. In addition to his work with The Cocktail Guru, Hal has been heavily involved with the planning of Portland Cocktail Week, a 5 day cocktail festival that takes place every October in Portland, Oregon.

In addition to working with the Cocktail Guru Hal works as one of the NY Brand Ambassadors for Angel’s Envy Whiskey.

He is currently serving his third consecutive term as Treasurer for the NY Chapter of the United States Bartenders Guild (USBG).  Hal has a deep love for scotch whisky and has hosted several events and dinners advocating its use as a cocktail base, including a dinner at Beast, Naomi Pomeroy’s restaurant in Portland during Portland Cocktail. Hal was also one of twenty final competitors in the US Diageo World Class competition in both 2012 and 2013.
